ABSTRACT
AISIN AW has developed a new six-speed automatic
transmission TR-60SN for rear wheel drive (RWD)
vehicles, for use in sports utility vehicles with high torque engines. This new TR-60SN has been developed based on the concept of improving fuel consumption and drivability while minimizing the number of component parts, and covering engine torque of 10 or 12 cylinders. To achieve this, TR-60SN utilizes component parts
including gear train, torque converter, oil pump, and
casing that have a completely new design. In addition, a
new electric-hydraulic control unit has also been
developed that offers both world class shift quality and a
sporty shift feeling.
INTRODUCTION
Recently, five-speed automatic transmissions for RWD vehicles have become standard throughout the world. Further, there has been a rapid increase in market demand for automatic transmissions with more multi speeds for further improved fuel efficiency and better driving performance. To meet these requirements, in
2002, AISIN AW developed a new RWD six-speed
automatic transmission TR-60SN which can cover a
range of engines, from a 6 cylinder medium class engine
to a large 10 or 12 cylinder engine for sports utility
vehicles. This is achieved by using different sizes of
torque converter, and varying the number of simple planetary pinions and friction discs, so as to cover the
wide torque range with one kind of transmission and a
hydraulic control unit. Specially, for 6 cylinder engine
application, weight reduction by 15 kg was realized as compared to large engine application, by using a small
torque converter, a 3 pinion simple planetary gear, fewer
friction discs, and so on.
Conventional automatic transmissions have been developed by increasing the number of planetary gears and clutches one by one in order to increase from 3 speed to 4 speed or 5 speed.
