ABSTRACT
AISIN AW has developed a six-speed automatic
transmission TF-60SN for front wheel drive (FWD)
vehicles. This new TF-60SN has been developed based
on the concepts of minimizing length and mass increase
as compared with current five-speed automatic
transmissions, and providing the world’s first transverse
FWD six-speed automatic transmission. This has been
accomplished using a newly developed planetary gear
set, and a new “squeezed” torque converter. In addition,
the control system features a unique design that
maintains outstanding compactness and achieves a high
quality smooth shift feeling. This paper describes the
construction, characteristics, and functions of this
six-speed automatic transmission.
INTRODUCTION
Almost 7 years have passed since FWD five-speed
automatic transmission became main stream in the world.
AISIN AW’s five-speed automatic transmission, 55-50SN,
announced in 1998, was an advanced automatic
transmission, and still offers advantages in terms of its
short length compared with competing models. On the other hand, social demands to protect the global
environment are growing stronger, and the automobile
industry is now facing the requirements posed by CO2
emission reduction and fuel efficiency improvement.
Moreover, demands for better drivability have been rising
in the market, and manufactures have to strike a balance
between better fuel consumption and better drivability,
which are completely opposed demands.
AISIN AW has developed an advanced new six-speed
automatic transmission TF-60SN for FWD vehicles that
is superior in terms of installation, performance, and function, in order to meet these demands. This newly developed TF-60SN is constructed with a
reduced number of component parts as compared with our current FWD five-speed automatic transmission, and uses a unique gear train. Six-speeds could be realized b
