ABSTRACT
The U.S. Army's National Automotive Center has
contracted with Illinois Institute of Technology Research
institute (IITRI), Southwest Research Institute (SwRI),
and Advanced Propulsion, LLC, to evaluate the effects
on fuel consumption and logistics that would result from
hybridizing the powertrains of the Army's tactical
wheeled vehicle fleet. This paper will outline the
approach taken to perform that evaluation and present a
synopsis of results achieved to date.
INTRODUCTION
The National 21st Century Truck Partnership seeks to
develop advanced, commercially viable technologies for
a new generation of trucking through partnership
between government and industry. The Partnership is a
consortium of Federal government agencies
(Department of Defense, Department of Energy,
Department of Transportation, and the Environmental
Protection Agency), major trucking manufacturers, their
suppliers and associations, and academic institutions.
The U.S. Army represents the Defense Department in
the National Partnership because, as the largest
governmental owner/operator of medium and heavy
truck fleets, it shares many of the challenges facing the
commercial truck market, such as achieving greater fuel
efficiency, reducing emissions, improving safety, and
enhancing performance. The Army's initiative under the
national program is known as Future Truck Systems
(FTS). FTS is designed to address uniquely military
needs, but also to work with industry to develop
technologies that have application in the commercial
sector, as well as the military.
The focal point of FTS is the Army's National Automotive
Center (MAC) located within the Tank-automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center
(TARDEC). TARDEC is an element of the U.S. Army
Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM)
in Warren, Michigan. NAC has contracted with Illinois
Institute of Technology Research Institute (IITRI),
Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), and Advanced
Propulsion, LLC, to evaluate the effects on fuel
consumption and logistics that would result from
hybridizing the powertrains of the Armys tactical
wheeled vehicle fleet.
