ABSTRACT
Hybrid electric propulsion is a viable, realistic, near-term
technology that can dramatically increase the fuel efficiency of commercial and military ground vehicles.
Hybrid vehicles also benefit from exhaust emission
reductions and the availability of an on-board source of mobile high power electrical energy for auxiliary systems.
INTRODUCTION
In 1998, the U.S. Army’s National Automotive Center in
Warren, MI and BAE SYSTEMS Conrols of Johnson City, NY partnered to develop a series hybrid FMTV (Family of Medium Tactical Wheeled Vehicles) military demonstrator truck to explore hybrid electric technology. This truck was the Army’s first “seed” program for the 21
st Century Truck Initiative. This truck typifies a
successful example of cost shared, cooperative public-private vehicle research that benefits both the commercial and military sector. It is also part of the initiative to reduce truck fatalities by 50 percent by 2010(1).
The two traction motor propulsion system for the Army’s
hybrid electric FMTV demonstrator truck is a direct descendant of a single motor hybrid design that LMCS original
