ABSTRACT
Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) mainly has two
advantageous characteristics such as no magnet andsimple construction. These characteristics contributelower cost and higher reliability compared with othermotor systems such as brushless permanent magnetmotors or induction motors. However, acoustic noiseand output torque ripple should be improved whenthe SRM is applied to a traction system for passengerelectric vehicle since these characteristics directlyaffect vehicle quietness and drivability. In this paper, we describe a system configuration ofthe SRM traction system for passenger electricvehicle. The SRM traction system includes anelectric motor, transmission gears and power invertermodule. Then, an approach to improve acousticnoise and output torque ripple is introduced.Generation mechanisms of acoustic noise and outputtorque ripple are analyzed. It is found that reduction
of magnetic attractive force between a motor statorand a rotor is very important factor to reduce acousticnoise and output torque ripple. We have developeda control algorithm to optimize the magneticattractive force. This control algorithm is verifiedand evaluated through dynamometer and actualvehicle tests. As a result, we have successfullydeveloped the SRM traction system which can beapplica
