ABSTRACT In September of 1991, Allison Transmission Division launched the World Transmission product line with therelease of the MD3060 automatic transmission into pro-duction. In January of 1996, Allison introduced theMD3066 transmission, the next response to markettrends in automatic transmissions for use in trucks. TheMD3066 transmission model has seen continuousimprovement since 1996, including an increase in appli-cation ratings in January of 1998, anticipating the needsof the target marketplace. This paper discusses the fea-tures, design and development of the MD3066 transmis-sion. INTRODUCTION The first section of this paper will cover the target marketfor the MD3066 transmission. This will include specificmarket requirements and a brief description of theMD3066 features. The second section will present adetailed description of the MD3066 features, options andavailable support equipment. The third and final sectionof this paper will discuss the development process thatwas conducted in order to provide a durable, reliabletransmission for the intended market. TARGET MARKET MARKET REQUIREMENTS – Since the initial release ofthe second generation Allison commercial, on-highwaytransmission in the early seventies, market requirementshave continued to become more stringent in order tomeet the needs of the vehicle
