ABSTRACT
Allison Transmission has developed a family of three new
automatic transmission products, the 1000, 2000 and2400 Series™, for the light and medium-duty commercialmarkets. This technical paper will discuss how Allisonfirst identified the opportunity, established the marketrequirements, designed, and validated these new prod-ucts.
INTRODUCTION
In 1915, James Allison started the Speedway RacingTeam, a company focused on the design and productionof race cars for the Indianapolis 500. During World War I,the focus of the company shifted from race cars to thedevelopment of aircraft engines. And with that, the namewas changed to the Allison Experimental Company. AfterJames Allison passed away, General Motors purchasedthe company in 1929, and renamed the company the Alli-son Division of General Motors. Through this transition,the design, development, and manufacture of aircraftengines continued to be the company’s focus. In 1945,Allison expanded beyond aircraft engines, and intoheavy-duty transmissions. Allison went on to introducethe world’s first heavy-duty torque converter equippedplanetary automatic transmission for military vehicles in1946. During the next ten yea
