Copyright © 1999 Society of Automotive Engineers, Inc. ABSTRACT Toyota Motor Corporation has developed a new four- speed automatic transaxle U140E named “ Super ECT”. The U140E has achieved compactness which enables itto mount on many new platforms, achieved high effi-ciency, which contributes to improve fuel economy, and itachieved good shift feeling, response, and reduce noise.This paper shows the major features and performance ofthe U140E. INTRODUCTION In recent years, the requirements for reducing fuel con-sumption has become more important due to environ-mental concerns. On the other hand, customer tasteshave shifted toward less fuel efficient vehicles (MPV, Min-ivans, etc.). In line with these trends, compactness andenhancing transmission efficiency allow for bothimprovements to vehicle platforms application flexibilityand fuel economy. This is an extremely important issuefor automatic transaxles(AT). In addition, high shift qual-ity must be a priority in the pursuit of an efficient, com-pact transaxle.
