ABSTRACT
Using the SAE N0.2 clutch friction test machine, we
evaluated the friction characteristics of six DEXRONe-!J I MERCON" ATFs and compared with the friction
characteristics of the genuine ATFs. The test conditions
were those specified by two big Japanese motor
companies. We also evaluated the anti-shudder
durability of DEXRONe-El I MERCON" ATFs using a
modified LVFA.
As the results, the four ATFs showed significantly lower
static friction coefficient ( p S) compared with each
genuine ATF in both the SAE N0.2 friction tests. And we
found that one ATF was equivalent to the genuine ATF
in the anti-shudder durability.
INTRODUCTION
Recently the slip control lock-up clutch mechanism is
attracting attention as a fuel-saving technology for
automatic transmission (AT). Some of the Japanese
automobile manufacturers now sell AT cars containing
this mechanism. The slip control AT uses genuine
automatic transmission fluid (ATF) having anti-shudder
characteristics('), which are not required by DEXRONa-
IU I MERCON" standard. Thus, Japanese automobile
manufacturers recommend that genuine ATFs
compatible with their ATs such as slip control ATs be
used. However, DEXRONe-IU I MERCON" ATF is also
available on the market, and ATF is often replaced with
non-genuine ATFs. In such cases, the compatibility of
the ATF with the friction characteristics of the wet clutch

In this study, we evaluated the friction characteristics of
six types of DEXRONCEl I MERCON" ATFs (five types
of commercial ATF in Japan and one commercial ATF in
the U.S.A.) using the SAE NO. 2 clutch friction test
machine, and compared the results with the friction
characteristics of the genuine ATFs. The test conditions
were those specified by twc major Japanese automobile
manufacturers. We also carried out a low velocity
friction test on the ATFs to evaluate their anti-shudder
durability.
PROPERTIES OF ATFS TESTED AND FRICTION
CHARACTERISTIC TEST CONDITIONS
Table 1 shows the properties of the ATFs tested. ATF
A is superior to the others in shear stability and oxidation
stability, except for friction characteristics.
