ABSTRACT
Polyaryletherketones (PAEK)andPolyimides (PI)are
increasingly usedfordemanding tribological applications,
especially inautomotive powertrains. Theparameters that
influencethewearrateofthesematerialsarepressure(p),
temperature, interfacialvelocity(v),counterfacial roughness,
component geometryandlubrication. Usingthegeometry
andcounterface definedinthetestingstandardASTMD
3702,ahighvelocitycomparative studyofthesehigh
performance engineering polymerswasconducted inan
attempttounderstand theeffectsofthepressureandvelocity
combination (pv)onwearrate.
SCOPE
Theobjectiveofthisstudywastodefineanappropriate test
standardforevaluating thewearrateofhighperformance
polymericmaterialsrelativetoautomotive powertrain conditions.
Usingthegeometryandcounterface surfacesdefinedinASTM
D-3702,polyaryletherketone (PAEK)andpolyimide (PI)
materialsweretestedatninecombinations ofpressureand
velocity.Thepressuresandvelocities(PVs)wererepeated
multipletimestostatistically determinetheaccuracyand
repeatability ofthetestmethod.Also,therequiredbreak-inwear
periodwasaccuratelydefined.Usingthepolyaryletherketone
astheteststandard,awearmechanism ispostulatedforeachset
oftestconditionstoexplainthedifferenceinwearratesasthe
velocityandpressuresvary.
INTRODUCTION
Alargenumberofpublishedstudiescomparing polymeric
wearratesarebasedonASTMD3702-78,titled"WearRateof
MaterialsinSelf-Lubricated RubbingContactUsingaThrust
WasherTestingMachine." Thistestdescribesastandard
geometryandtestprotocolthatisconsistentwiththecircular
wearmotionthattransmission sealringsandthrustwasher
components experienceinservice.Inthebodyofthistestm
