Abstract
Thispaperinvestigates theuseofinternally
lubricated andreinforced thermoplastic compounds in
tribological applications requiringhighpressure-velocity (P
V)performance. Elevated temperature weartesting,
limitingP-Vtestingandelevatedtemperature mechanical
testingdemonstrate thefeasibility ofusinginternally
lubricated andreinforced Polyetheretherketone and
thermoplastic Polyimides inhighP-Vapplications. Thedata
alsosuggestthatreinforced andlubricated Polyphenylene
SulfideandPolyphthalamide maybeworthinvestigating as
evenlowercostalternatives.
Introduction
Inthesearchforlowercostcomponents in
automotive applications, engineers haveembraced theuse
ofinjectionmoldedthermoplastic composites inmany
applications previously designated formetal.However, for
applications thatoperateathighpressure-velocity levels
(above100,000 fpm-psi) inelevated temperature
environments, the materials ofchoicehavebeenlimitedto
specialty thermoset polyimides, semi-thermoplastic
polyamide-imides andcompression moldedfluoropolymer
compounds. Althoughthesematerials offerperformance
enhancements notfoundinmetalbearingalloys,theyare
relatively expensive frombothamaterials and
manufacturing perspective, oftenrequiring specialized
moldingequipment andextensive postmoldcuringor
annealing. Recentworkhasshowncertainhigh
temperature, internally lubricated andreinforced
thermoplastic compound· tobesuitableforthesetypesof
applications (sealrings,thrustwashers, bearings)atlower
costandreducedmanufacturing expense.
Thispaperinvestigates thetribological and
mechanical performance ofseveralofthesehigh
temperature internallylubricated thermoplastic compounds
incomparison tosomeofthemorecommonly used
thermoset andsemi-thermopl
