ABSTRACT
Turbine hubs forautomatic transmission torque
converters areideal candidates forthepowder
metallurgy (P/M) process. Thecomplex shape of
turbine hubs iscostly toproduce viaconventional
forging andmachining operations. Increases inengine
sizeandtorque requirements byautomotive designers
require turbine hubs topossess high levels of
mechanical properties. High density P/M
manufacturing techniques, incombination with high
performance ferrous material produces components
capable ofreplacing aforged andmachined turbine hub.
This paper willreview theconversion ofa
conventionally forged andmachined turbine hubused in
ahightorque automatic transmission toasingle pressed
andsingle sintered P/Mturbine hub. Thematerial used
fortheP/M hubwas anMPIF FD-0405. Warm
compaction processing achieved significantly increased
overall sintered densities inthehighly stressed internal
spline region. Extensive mechanical andpartspecific
testing wasconducted toverify thesuitability ofthe
P/Mpart.
